Recovery from injury is often a slow process. Proper nutrition plays an important role in promoting wound healing and improving immune system function in patients undergoing surgery or that are recovering from injuries. Post-op immune system declination is common after major surgery, and appears to be due partly because of a failure to meet the increased nutritional requirements which can predispose patients to infection. Providing your body with the raw materials it needs can hasten recovery. IV treatments are often complimented with oral treatments in between IVs.
Numerous studies indicate that zinc supplementation accelerated wound healing in surgical patients so our Naturopaths usually add at least 10-30mg of Zinc Sulfate to our IV treatments. Oral Zinc recommendations to our patients are usually begun 2–4 weeks prior to surgery and continued for 4–6 weeks after surgery.
Low Magnesium levels are common in surgical patients (occurring in 61% of surgical ICU patients in one study) so our Naturopaths usually add 1-2grams of Magnesium sulfate to our Recovery IVs as well.
Vitamin A supplementation can increase the strength of healing surgical wounds. Vitamin A appears to increase collagen production and improve lymphocyte function. Because Vitamin A is Fat soluble our Naturopaths are unable to give it intravenously. Therefore, it is our practice to recommend oral emulsified vitamin A, beginning 2–4 weeks prior to surgery and continuing for 4–6 weeks after surgery alongside Zinc supplementation already mentioned. Low dose Vitamin E supplementation can also be helpful for reducing scar formation - because Vitamin E can affect clotting it has been our practice to recommend only low doses of Vitamin E to our Edmonton patients.
Oral Glutamine can also be helpful for reducing post-op immune suppression. Lastly, numerous B Vitamins (B1, B6, B12) have been studied for their benefits in wound healing so our Naturopathic doctors usually also spike the Recovery IV bags with B-Vitamins. Proteolytic enzymes are often added orally by our Naturopaths to reduce swelling and accelerate recovery.
