Alternative Autoimmune Disease Management in Edmonton.

Our Naturopaths work with autoimmunity.

At our clinic assess and consider a wide range of areas and integrate standard and natural therapies.

We focus on inflammation management, dietary augmentation as a corner stone of most autoimmune diseases.

Our Naturopathic doctors look for environmental autoimmune triggers: Molecular Mimicry, Bystander activation and Toxicants such as heavy metals and pesticides as well as mold toxicity

Naturopathic Autoimmune Treatment in Edmonton

The Gut & Autoimmune Disease

For many autoimmune diseases we often begin with food sensitivity or food allergy testing and dietary augmentation. Depending on the severity of elevations on your food sensitivity test, we may initiate aggressive gut healing protocols in our autoimmune disease patients.

IgG Food sensitivities are our preferred test method for most autoimmune diseases.

IgG1,2& 3 are pro-inflammatory and activate the complement pathway and can add to already present inflammation aside from direct immune activation described below.

Entry of proteins across the intestinal barrier (usually because of disruptions in tight junctions) into the lamina propria is though to be a triggering factor for the immune system.

Dendritic cells will receive the dietary protein and act as an antigen presenting cell to induce T cell proliferation - these are the "leaky gut" mechanisms.

One reason gluten is commonly excluded by our Naturopaths in many autoimmune diseases is that Gluten upregulates zonulin which disrupts the tight junctions.

LDN

Prescriptions such as LDN (low dose naltrexone) are often suggested by our Naturopaths through referrals to collaborative Health Professionals in Edmonton or our Nurse Practitioner.

LDN is a well known off-label autoimmune treatment with a track record in MS & Crohn's disease in particular.

LDN is also frequently used in Alternative Cancer Treatments.

There is some data that suggests LDN is helpful for autoimmune Thyroid disease as well. It's typically low cost and well tolerated and single day dosing makes it an attractive option for use in autoimmunity and cancer.

Our Naturopaths also often suggest various anti-inflammatory nutraceuticals to help quell inflammation and damage to body systems - Curcumin, Green Tea Extract, and CBD are common autoimmune anti-inflammatories.

Infections & Autoimmunity

Our Naturopathic Doctors offer infection screening when we work with autoimmune diseases. Viruses, Bacteria & Yeast as potential triggers depending on the autoimmune disease.

EBV, HHV-6, Candida, and Chlamydia pneumoniae and Borrelia burgdorferi are classic infectious agents our Naturopaths screen for in MS patients.

EBV is a common suspect in numerous autoimmune diseases. Our Naturopathic doctors screen not only our MS patients for EBV but RA, Lupus, Hashimoto's patients, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Type 1 Diabetes.

Gut yeast and bacteria are also suspect when our Naturopaths are doing a work-up on an autoimmune patient. For instance, Klebsiella & Citrobacter are two possible gut bacteria associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Thyroid autoimmunity has numerous viruses like EBV and gut bacteria (H.pylori, Yersinia) and parasites (Blastocystis hominis & toxoplasmosis).

Our Naturopathic Doctors usually send viral testing to Immunosciences lab or Armin Labs where we usually check for all Herpes Viruses.

We also do microbiome analysis primarily with the Gi Effects Stool Test or Doctor's Data CDSA.

Gut Candidiasis is clasically related to MS, Psoriasis, Hashimoto's, Autoimmune hemolytic anemia & myasthenia gravis, and Lupus. So our Naturopaths keep an eye out for Candida overgrowth when we run microbiome analysis tests on our Edmonton Autoimmune patients.

Infectious Testing

Other considerations

Genetic analysis, Environmental Toxicants & Heavy Metal Testing are also areas our Naturopaths consider in Autoimmune Disease.

Many autoimmune patients in Edmonton and Alberta do better with basic interventions like removing common allergens such as dairy and gluten.

Dr. Muradov does the majority of autoimmune disease treatment at our Edmonton clinic.

Crohn's & Colitis patients can often do incredibly well with Intravenous Therapy at our clinic because our Naturopaths are able to side-step a defective absorption system and place key deficient substances right into the blood.

IV Therapy is used in select autoimmune diseases. For instance, in IBD we can use IV Drips to bypass a deranged and inflamed digestive tract. In MS, or ALS we can use IV infusions to drive substances across the blood brain barrier more readily than with oral consumption.

Gut Health and Autoimmune Disease – A Core Naturopathic Focus

Most autoimmune diseases begin in the gut, even when symptoms appear elsewhere—brain, joints, skin, thyroid, or nervous system. This is why our clinic frequently begins with IgG food sensitivity testing, microbiome analysis, and gut barrier (leaky gut) assessment.

The Gut-Autoimmunity Mechanism:

1️⃣ Leaky Gut / Intestinal Hyperpermeability
Gluten and other triggers ↑ Zonulin → disrupts tight junctions → proteins cross into circulation.

2️⃣ Immune Activation
Dietary proteins enter the lamina propria → Dendritic cells present antigens → T-cells become activated → cytokine and complement pathway activation.

3️⃣ IgG1, IgG2 & IgG3-Mediated Inflammation
These subclasses can significantly trigger inflammatory cascades in autoimmune individuals.

4️⃣ Molecular Mimicry and Cross-Reactivity
Some food proteins and microbial antigens resemble body tissues, causing the immune system to mistakenly target thyroid, joints, myelin (MS), skin, or intestines.

Our Naturopaths frequently recommend eliminating gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, or corn in autoimmune disease cases, based on testing or clinical history.

IV Therapy for Autoimmune Disease in Edmonton

Certain autoimmune conditions benefit greatly from IV nutrient therapy, especially when digestive absorption is damaged (Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac, chronic gastritis).

Why IV Therapy helps in autoimmune conditions:
✔ Bypasses defective intestinal absorption
✔ Delivers high-dose nutrients directly into bloodstream
✔ Provides anti-inflammatory, mitochondrial, and detox support
✔ Helpful in MS, Crohn’s, Chronic Fatigue, Hashimoto’s, Colitis, Psoriasis, Lupus

Examples of IV therapies used at our Edmonton Clinic:

  • IV Glutathione (anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, detoxification)

  • IV Vitamin C (immune regulation, viral modulation, antioxidant support)

  • IV Myers’ Cocktail (B-vitamins, Magnesium, Vitamin C)

  • IV NAD+ (mitochondrial support, neurological benefits, autoimmune fatigue)

LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone) in Autoimmune Disease

Our Naturopathic Doctors frequently suggest LDN as part of autoimmune support, through collaboration with our Nurse Practitioner or referral to prescribing Edmonton professionals.

Why LDN is effective:

  • Regulates T-regulatory cells (Tregs), helping normalize immune responses

  • Reduces inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-6)

  • Helps with MS, Crohn’s, Hashimoto’s, Fibromyalgia, Psoriasis, and even some cases of autoimmune arthritis

  • Low cost, well-tolerated, once-daily dosing

  • Also used as part of alternative cancer treatment support

Environmental Toxicants & Autoimmunity

Our Edmonton Naturopaths assess environmental exposures that may drive autoimmune activation:

☣ Heavy metals – Mercury, Arsenic, Lead, Aluminum
Mold toxins (Mycotoxins) – Can suppress or dysregulate immune function
Pesticides and Glyphosate – Known triggers for leaky gut and autoimmunity
Volatile Chemicals and Plastics – Potential endocrine disruptors worsening immune imbalance

We use urine provocation testing, environmental exposure labs, and detoxification protocols when indicated.

Infection & Autoimmune Disease Testing in Edmonton

Infections are widely recognized as autoimmune triggers. Our clinic screens for:

EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) – strongly linked to MS, Hashimoto’s, Lupus, RA
Borrelia (Lyme disease) and Chlamydia pneumoniae – MS and arthritis triggers
Candida and Gut Yeasts – associated with Hashimoto’s, Psoriasis, MS
Klebsiella, Citrobacter, Yersinia, H. pylori – common in RA and thyroid autoimmunity

Naturopathic Care for Autoimmune Diseases

Autoimmune diseases can affect many different organs and tissues. Effective care often requires a comprehensive approach that addresses inflammation, immune regulation, metabolic health, and nutrient status.

At TruMed Naturopathic Medicine, our naturopathic approach to autoimmune conditions focuses on identifying underlying contributors while supporting long-term immune balance.

Patients searching for an autoimmune naturopath in Edmonton often seek support for conditions such as:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS is an autoimmune neurological condition that affects the central nervous system and may cause fatigue, mobility challenges, and neurological symptoms.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

IBD includes conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which involve chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition characterized by rapid skin cell turnover and chronic inflammation.

Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect multiple organs including the skin, joints, kidneys, and nervous system.

Autoimmune Hepatitis

Autoimmune hepatitis involves immune-mediated inflammation of the liver.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune joint disease that causes inflammation, joint pain, and progressive joint damage.

Our goal is to support immune regulation, inflammation balance, and metabolic resilience while improving overall health and quality of life.

IV Therapy for Autoimmune Support

Intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy delivers vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system.

These nutrients may help support immune function, antioxidant defenses, and cellular repair, which can be important in individuals with autoimmune conditions.

Patients searching for IV therapy in Edmonton for autoimmune diseases often pursue treatment to support:

  • Energy levels and fatigue

  • Immune system balance

  • Recovery from chronic inflammation

  • Nutrient deficiencies associated with autoimmune disease

At TruMed Naturopathic Medicine, IV therapy protocols are tailored to each patient’s health goals and medical history.

NAD+ IV Therapy and Cellular Energy in Autoimmune Disease

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a critical coenzyme involved in mitochondrial energy production and cellular repair.

Many autoimmune diseases are associated with increased metabolic stress and inflammation, which can affect cellular energy systems.

NAD+ supports:

  • Mitochondrial energy production

  • DNA repair pathways

  • Cellular resilience to stress

  • Neurological health and cognitive function

These processes may be particularly relevant in autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis and lupus, where cellular energy metabolism and tissue repair play important roles.

'

Patients searching for NAD IV therapy in Edmonton often pursue treatment to support energy levels, metabolic health, and recovery from chronic illness.

At TruMed Naturopathic Medicine, NAD+ IV therapy may be incorporated into integrative programs supporting immune and metabolic health.

Myers Cocktail IV Therapy and Immune System Support

The Myers Cocktail is a widely used intravenous nutrient therapy originally developed by physician John Myers.

This IV formulation contains vitamins and minerals involved in immune function, metabolic health, and nervous system regulation.

Typical ingredients include:

  • Magnesium

  • Calcium

  • B-complex vitamins

  • Vitamin B12

  • Vitamin C

These nutrients support processes related to autoimmune health, including:

  • Immune system regulation

  • Reduction of inflammatory stress

  • Cellular energy metabolism

  • Nervous system support

Patients searching for Myers Cocktail IV therapy in Edmonton often pursue treatment to support energy levels and immune resilience.

Glutathione IV Therapy and Autoimmune Inflammation

Glutathione is the body’s most important intracellular antioxidant and plays a central role in detoxification and protection against oxidative stress.

Autoimmune diseases are often associated with chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which may contribute to tissue damage.

Glutathione supports:

  • Neutralization of free radicals

  • Detoxification pathways in the liver

  • Protection of cells from oxidative damage

  • Regulation of immune system activity

Healthy antioxidant systems may help support inflammatory balance and immune regulation in autoimmune conditions.

Glutathione IV therapy in Edmonton allows higher concentrations of this antioxidant to reach tissues quickly.

At TruMed Naturopathic Medicine, glutathione therapy may be incorporated into treatment plans designed to support detoxification, inflammation balance, and immune health.

Iron Infusions and Autoimmune Fatigue

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms experienced by individuals with autoimmune diseases.

Iron deficiency can contribute to fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and cognitive difficulties, particularly in individuals with autoimmune conditions affecting the digestive system such as inflammatory bowel disease.

Iron is essential for:

  • Oxygen transport in the blood

  • Cellular energy metabolism

  • Brain function and cognitive performance

For individuals who cannot tolerate oral iron supplements or require rapid correction of deficiency, iron infusions in Edmonton may help restore iron levels efficiently.

At TruMed Naturopathic Medicine, iron infusions are recommended only after appropriate laboratory testing confirms deficiency.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Autoimmune Recovery

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, which significantly increases oxygen delivery to tissues.

Enhanced oxygen delivery may support tissue repair, cellular metabolism, and recovery from inflammatory stress.

Patients searching for hyperbaric oxygen therapy or hyperbaric chambers in Edmonton often explore this therapy as part of integrative programs supporting recovery from chronic illness.

Potential benefits may include:

  • Improved oxygen delivery to tissues

  • Support for cellular repair processes

TRT & Autoimmunity

Emerging research suggests that testosterone acts as a natural immune modulator. It generally has an anti-inflammatory effect, which is why autoimmune conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are statistically more common in individuals with lower androgen levels. In our Edmonton clinic, we explore Testosterone Replacement Therapy as a supportive measure for patients with autoimmune concerns. By dampening the overactive immune response and reducing systemic inflammation, TRT can help stabilize autoimmune flares and protect tissues from the chronic damage associated with an overstimulated immune system.

BHRT & Autoimmune Support

Autoimmunity is often driven by a systemic "fire" of inflammation. Interestingly, testosterone and other bioidentical hormones have been shown to have potent immunomodulatory effects. For patients in Edmonton managing autoimmune conditions, BHRT can help shift the immune system away from a pro-inflammatory state. By maintaining optimal, bioidentical levels of testosterone, we can help protect tissues from autoimmune attack and support the body's natural anti-inflammatory pathways. TruMed integrates BHRT into our autoimmune protocols to provide a layer of hormonal protection that supports overall disease stability.
