Naturopath Therapies

How our Naturopaths address a wide-range of conditions

Our Naturopaths are trained in many therapies

We have four Naturopathic Doctors on staff with a wide range of alternative training

Our team brings diverse clinical interests and training to help address a broad range of concerns

We offer a full array of Hormone Replacement Therapy through our Nurse Practitioner

Our Naturopaths focus on these therapies:

Functional medicine
Botanicals
Nutritional supplements
Dietary changes
IV Therapies

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment

Prolotherapy

Hormone Replacement (HRT)

Testosterone Replacement (TRT)

Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is an individualized approach that examines how different body systems interact and contribute to health and disease.

Rather than focusing exclusively on a diagnosis or isolated symptom, our naturopathic doctors consider the patient’s overall health, history, lifestyle and relevant physiological processes.

The human body is interconnected, and similar symptoms or diagnoses can arise through different contributing pathways.

Functional Medicine seeks to identify relevant factors that may be influencing a person’s health while developing a personalized care plan.

Functional Medicine is fundamentally patient-centred.

Our naturopathic doctors take the time to understand each person’s individual concerns and develop recommendations based on their clinical needs rather than applying a standardized treatment plan to everyone.

Botanical Medicine

Our naturopathic doctors at TruMed have extensive training in botanical medicine and regularly incorporate carefully selected herbal preparations into individualized treatment plans.

Herbal medicine involves the use of plants and plant-derived compounds that may influence various physiological processes.

The selection of an herbal treatment depends on the available evidence, the patient’s symptoms, health history, medications and treatment goals.

A growing number of herbal medicines have been investigated in clinical trials.

Some have demonstrated potential benefits for specific symptoms or conditions, while the quality of evidence varies considerably between herbs and indications.

At TruMed, our naturopathic doctors consider clinical research, traditional applications, product quality and individual patient factors when making botanical recommendations.

Our goal is to provide a clear clinical rationale for herbal recommendations while acknowledging the limitations of available evidence

Supplementation

Nutritional supplementation is another important component of naturopathic care at TruMed.

Our naturopathic doctors may recommend nutrients, natural extracts, amino acids, biochemical intermediates and other nutritional compounds based on a patient’s individual needs.

Nutritional supplements can serve a variety of purposes, including addressing identified deficiencies, supporting normal physiological processes and complementing dietary or medical treatment.

Recommendations may involve:

  • Vitamins and minerals

  • Amino acids

  • Essential fatty acids

  • Nutritional extracts

  • Biochemical intermediates

  • Specialized nutritional formulations

Some supplements provide compounds that naturally occur in the body or participate in normal biochemical pathways.

However, the fact that a substance is naturally produced does not automatically establish that high-dose supplementation is appropriate or beneficial for every patient.

Our naturopathic doctors consider the intended purpose, available evidence, dosage, potential interactions and individual clinical circumstances before recommending supplementation.

Diet

Dietary changes can be an important part of treatment for a wide range of health concerns.

At TruMed, our naturopathic doctors recognize that nutritional recommendations should be personalized according to a patient’s symptoms, preferences, medical history, lifestyle and treatment goals.

The most suitable dietary approach will differ from person to person.

Depending on the clinical situation, our naturopathic doctors may work with strategies such as:

  • Low-carbohydrate diets

  • Ketogenic diets

  • Low-FODMAP diets

  • Elimination or hypoallergenic diets

  • Low-oxalate diets

  • Autoimmune Protocol (AIP)

  • Low-lectin approaches

  • Carnivore diets

  • Swank-style dietary strategies

  • Intermittent fasting

Dietary changes should be evaluated in the context of nutritional adequacy, sustainability, medications and existing medical conditions.

At TruMed, our naturopathic doctors may discuss dietary assessment, elimination strategies or testing when clinically appropriate.

An elimination diet can sometimes help identify foods associated with symptoms, although maintaining a restrictive diet may be difficult for some patients.

The choice depends on the patient’s symptoms, history, budget and treatment goals.

Our approach is to combine the patient’s history, clinical assessment and appropriate testing or dietary strategies rather than relying on a single test result.

IV Therapy in Edmonton

The naturopathic doctors at TruMed offer IV Therapy as one component of individualized naturopathic care.

Intravenous administration delivers substances directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive tract.

This can be useful in selected clinical situations where oral administration is unsuitable or when a specific intravenous treatment is medically appropriate.

IV Therapy may provide advantages such as:

  • Direct delivery into the bloodstream

  • More predictable administration of a prescribed dose

  • Use in circumstances where oral absorption is limited

  • Administration at concentrations that may not be achievable through oral supplementation

The effects of IV Therapy vary depending on the substance administered, dose, patient health and clinical indication.

IV treatment is not appropriate for every patient, and potential risks—including infusion reactions, fluid-related complications and effects on electrolyte balance—must be considered.

At TruMed, our naturopathic doctors develop IV prescriptions based on the patient’s health history, treatment objectives and clinical assessment.

TruMed has extensive experience providing IV Therapy, with more than 14,000 treatments administered.

Some IV protocols may be used alongside Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as part of a broader, individualized treatment plan. The appropriateness of combining therapies depends on the patient’s circumstances and the specific treatments involved.

Hyperbaric Chambers

TruMed added Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to our Edmonton clinic in 2020.

Our facility includes two monoplace hyperbaric chambers designed to deliver pressurized oxygen treatments.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized environment.

Increased pressure can substantially raise the amount of oxygen dissolved in blood plasma, potentially improving oxygen delivery to selected tissues.

The physiological effects of HBOT may include:

  • Increased oxygen availability in certain tissues

  • Support for wound-healing processes

  • Effects on inflammatory signalling

  • Stimulation of processes involved in tissue repair

  • Changes in blood vessel formation and cellular responses

The clinical benefits depend on the condition being treated, treatment protocol and patient characteristics.

International evidence is available supporting views of Hyperbaric in non UHMS-indications.

Prolotherapy Injections

TruMed began offering prolotherapy in Edmonton in 2022 as an injection-based option for selected musculoskeletal and pain-related concerns.

Prolotherapy involves injecting a solution—often dextrose-based—into or around an affected joint, ligament, tendon or other structure.

The treatment is intended to stimulate a local tissue response, although the precise mechanisms and clinical effectiveness can vary depending on the condition and treatment technique.

Prolotherapy may be considered for certain concerns involving:

  • Knee, elbow arthritis

  • Finger, toe arthritis

  • Tennis and Golfer's elbow

  • Rotator cuff-related tendon problems

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Hip adductor tendon concerns

Evidence for prolotherapy varies by condition, and it is not appropriate for every type of injury or pain.

A clinical assessment is necessary to determine whether the treatment may be suitable.

Treatment plans can involve a series of injections spaced several weeks apart.

The number of sessions depends on the patient’s condition, response to treatment and treatment objectives.

BHRT & TRT

TruMed offers Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) and selected thyroid hormone treatment options through our Nurse Practitioner.

Bioidentical hormones are compounds that have the same molecular structure as hormones produced naturally by the human body.

Before recommending Hormone Replacement Therapy, our Nurse Practitioner conducts an assessment and orders appropriate laboratory testing to help determine whether a patient may be a candidate.
