ThyroidOur Naturopaths often will run nutritional and Thyroid Testing (TSH, FT3, FT4, RT3). Fatigue, especially if most pronounced in the morning, is a common manifestation of hypothyroidism. Our Naturopaths always screen our fatigue patients for hypothyroidism. We even make sure that patients already on Thyroid medication are converting and utilizing their Thyroid hormone medication appropriately.
Our Naturopathic Doctors consider Thyroid an issue especially if accessory Thyroid symptoms are present in addition to fatigue: weakness, depression, constipation, hoarseness, weight gain, memory loss, poor mental concentration, cold extremities or intolerance to the cold, dry skin, dry or thinning hair and menstrual irregularities. Adrenals
We commonly see this energy pattern in adrenal fatigue patients: Morning fatigue, Mid-day dip in energy and best energy in the evening. In addition, we usually run salivary hormones (often DHEA and Cortisol) to assess Adrenal health. NutrientsKey Nutrients for energy: Magnesium - Magnesium is required for the synthesis and utilization of ATP, the major storage form of energy in the body. Several studies have found that magnesium levels are low in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and it's thought that half of the US population has inadequate Magnesium intake (and Canadians likely as well!). So our Naturopaths load our patients up with oral and IV Magnesium at our Edmonton clinic. Magnesium potassium aspartate is particularly helpful for Fatigue when given orally. RBC minerals levels are a great way to assess cellular Magnesium status. B12 - B12 is used to make Succinyl-CoA - an important part of the citric acid cycle (Krebs) and when Succinyl-CoA is converted to Succinate, it's involved in the electron transport chain for ATP production. Our Naturopaths use Intramuscular B12 shots and give large IV B12 doses of B12 for Fatigue. We usually want to see our patients' B12 levels above 700 pg/ml but some patients feel their best with levels well over 1000 pg/ml. Vitamin D - We all know that pretty much everyone that's not supplementing Vitamin D in Alberta is deficient. Vitamin D deficiency can cause fatigue, and low Vitamin D can also cause aches and pains. For many of our patients we recommend doses around 5000-10 000 IU of Vitamin D3 usually with a meal because it's fat soluble unless it's already emulsified. Iodine - Our Naturopaths screen many of our Edmonton patients with fatigue for Iodine deficiency. Iodine is a main component of Thyroid hormone and is a common cause of fatigue even with normal Thyroid tests. Free Iodine is needed for proper Thyroid hormone conversion from T4 to T3. Our Naturopath clinic offers Edmonton Urinary Iodine testing which is not available in Edmonton through Alberta health. Adrenal, Thyroid, & Nutritional Test Reports
